Top Financial Companies For 2014

It's not just Kate Middleton and Prince William having a baby these days. There are a lot of new parents and parents-to-be out there. There are 4 million babies born in this country every year. Moms and dads may have the basic essentials covered, but financial planning for newborns is probably not a priority.

Wouldn't it be great to assemble portfolios for newborns that will grow alongside them? Wouldn't it be great if these stocks were also relevant to newborns and toddlers?

Let's single out a few companies that every parent should consider owning.

1. Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  )
The two best-known diaper brands are owned by two publicly traded companies. Kimberly-Clark makes Huggies, and Procter & Gamble is the consumer-goods conglomerate behind Pampers, the world's best-selling diaper brand.

Procter & Gamble also puts out the value-minded Luvs line of diapers, and it even gets in on the newborn laundry game with its Dreft detergent that's specially formulated to be gentle on a baby's skin.

The iPhone remains Apple's most important product by far, accounting for close to half of the company's value, according to our estimates. For this quarter, Apple shipped about 35 million iPhones, representing a 12.7% jump over the same quarter a year ago, although revenue growth was slightly lower at around 9% possibly due to a greater mix of lower-end handsets. Business remained healthy in emerging markets such as Brazil, Russia, India and China, where iPhone shipments grew by around 55% year-over-year. China turned out to be particularly strong market, with overall revenues (from all products) growing by roughly 28% year-over-year and iPhone sales growing twice as fast as the broader Chinese smartphone market. However, sales in Japan, which had been one of the iPhone's fastest growing markets in recent quarters, were impacted by an increase in value added taxes (VAT) and some changes to the regulatory environment for mobile carriers.

Although the Fed doubled its bond buying last September, the top gold exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, including SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD  ) , iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU  ) , and ETFS Physical Swiss Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: SGOL  ) , have dropped around 25% each over the last 12 months, which speaks to gold's extreme vulnerability to QE tapering. Even the mere mention of tapering seems to send gold into a tailspin, as seen with SPDR Gold Shares, which has plunged 24% year to date and also suffered massive losses with its physical holdings. Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEMKT: GDX  ) has suffered a massive drop of 48% so far in 2013, making it one of the worst-performing ETFs this year.

Ever wish you could go back in time and get in on the ground floor of online stock-trading names like Charles Schwab Corp. (NYSE:SCHW), TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. (NYSE:AMTD), or E TRADE Financial Corporation (NASDAQ:ETFC)? While all three stocks have done fairly well since debuting anywhere about 20 years ago, the lion's share of their gains came in just the first few months of their existence. SCHW rallied just shy of 400% in its first eleven months of trading. AMTD soared more than 750% during its first six months of being a publicly-traded stock. ETFC had jumped a whopping 1289% nine months after its IPO. Well, while nobody can get in a time machine and do it over, there's another online-trading company on the horizon that could be similarly potent. It's Indo Global Exchanges PteLtd (OTCMKTS:IGEX).
