Hot Rising Companies To Invest In 2014

Big Tech is still a great place to earn safe, double-digit income streams.   You just have to think unconventionally to get them.    Regular Growth Stock Wire readers are familiar with our "Big Cheap Tech" idea...   As we've written many times in the past, some of the market's largest, most established technology companies are very cheap... pay steady and rising dividends... and are unpopular with most investors. For example, after factoring in its cash balance, consumer-products giant Apple is trading for less than 10 times earnings.   The knock against some tech companies is that they aren't growing fast enough to push share prices higher. But as folks who use simple option-selling strategies know, you don't need rising share prices to produce 10%... 15%... even 20% income streams on a Big Tech position. You simply need the stocks not to fall.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By John Udovich]

Small cap debt collection stocks likeAsta Funding, Inc (NASDAQ: ASFI), Encore Capital Group, Inc (NASDAQ: ECPG) and Portfolio Recovery Associates, Inc (NASDAQ: PRAA) could be the latest target of a government shakedown or crackdown as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week thatbefore it formally proposes any rules for debt collection, it wants to hear how collectors verify borrowers' information and communicate with consumers. In other words, debt collectors could be restricted from using text messages, social media or other Internet-based tools in their pursuit to collect debts. With about one in 10 Americans coming out of the financial crisis with some debt in collection, investing in small capdebt collection stocks has been profitable for investors. However, there is no timeline for when any new rules might be released for review or come into effect.

  • [By Tim Melvin]

There a lot of moving parts to Asta Funding (ASFI), but there appears to be a great deal of value that isn reflected in the current stock price. ASFI stock is trading at less than 65% of book value, but several of its debt collection assets are carried at zero cost basis and yet may have substantial value. The balance sheet is strong with more than $90 million in cash. ASFI has been moving into other businesses including disability claims to increase its growth opportunities over the next few years. It a fairly complex business, but it is very cheap — and the first sign of good news could send the shares a lot higher.

This is extremely important for Anthem (NYSE: ANTM  ) (formerly WellPoint) which was the big Obamacare enrollment winner last year and has banked its success on courting Medicaid expansion enrollees as well. California's strong Medi-Cal enrollment so far is encouraging, but I'd reserve judgment until Anthem's fourth-quarter earnings report.

From a technical perspective, GALT spiked sharply higher here with strong upside volume. This stock has been uptrending for the last three months, with shares ripping higher from its low of $3.95 to its recent high of $13.21. During that move, shares of GALT have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of GALT within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if GALT manages to take out Monday's high of $12.44 and then once it clears its 52-week high at $13.21 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in GALT as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $11 or at $10 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 222,171 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then GALT will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory above $13.21, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $15 to $16.

Contrast that with General Motors (NYSE: GM  ) , which sold 4,421 of its plug-in hybrid Volts in North America during the first quarter, according to a Bloomberg report. Nissan's (NASDAQOTH: NSANY  ) electric Leaf took third place in the plug-in rankings with 3,695 sales.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

GM sales disappointing but not thesis changing – take advantage of sell-off. While GM sales of -6% y/y were shy of Street expectations calling for +1.5% y/y growth, we wouldn’t read too much into one month of sales. Further, we believe GM did a better job holding the line on incentive spending in the month which means more profitable sales. To wit, GM average incentive/unit was up +4% y/y, below the industry increase of +7% y/y and well below Ford (F) at 24% y/y, Toyota (TM) at +8% y/y, Honda (HMC) at +17% y/y and Nissan (NSANY) at +13% y/y. For 4Q13, GM US sales were +6% y/y, which is above our NA wholesale forecast of +4% y/y. Yes, there are some adjustments when comparing monthly sales to wholesale units, but we believe, net, our volume assumptions are ok. On the other hand, we have increased confidence in our 4Q13 NA price factor.

He also points out that even when an automaker enters into an agreement with a battery manufacturer -- as Tesla, Nissan (NASDAQOTH: NSANY  ) and Toyota (NYSE: TM  ) have done with Panasonic (NASDAQOTH: PCRFY  ) -- the automaker is "integrally involved" in the design and production of the battery.

This series, brought to you by Yahoo! Finance, looks at which upgrades and downgrades make sense, and which ones investors should act on. Today, our headlines feature a pair of upgrades for home furnishings store Pier 1 (NYSE: PIR  ) and engine technologist BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA  ) . Let's address those two real quick, before we get to the day's really big news (about American Tower (NYSE: AMT  ) ).

  • [By Jon C. Ogg]

American Tower Corp. (NYSE: AMT) is seeing something rather strange in its trading activity on Friday. Its shares are rallying, despite the company spending some $3.3 billion to acquire more cell tower assets. What makes this so interesting is that the valuation actually mayrekindle interest in the entire cell tower sector, and that would be welcoming for many investors who have held on as this sector has suffered while the market has been strong.

  • [By Michael Flannelly]

Before the bell on Monday, analysts at Nomura Securities upgraded telecommunication tower site operator American Tower Corp (AMT) due to an industry wide upgrade of telecom tower operators, including the non-dividend paying companies SAB Comm (SBAC) and Crown Castle (CCI).

The analysts upgraded AMT from “Neutral” to “Buy” and now see shares reaching $90, up from the previous price target of $85. This new price target suggests a 22% upside to the stock’s Friday closing price of $73.71.

“Tower industry revenue grew over 20% in 1H13, helped by strong carrier network spending and tower acquisitions,” Nomura analyst Adam Ilkowitz noted. “On an organic basis, we believe site rental revenue growth of ~11% for the tower operators is a sign of the health of the U.S. wireless industry and elevated capital spending. After 30% portfolio growth in 2012 across the three tower operators, profitability is recovering from diluted levels. Despite a still-tepid global economy, carriers are investing in their networks to respond to consumer demands and traffic growth. With our positive outlook and upwardly revised estimates, we are increasing our target prices for AMT and SBAC both from $85 to $90 and raising AMT to a Buy. We are raising our 2014 AFFO estimates for all three operators given strong activity levels and announced acquisitions.”

Furthermore, the analysts at Nomura lowered AMT’s fiscal 2013 adjusted funds from operations (AFFO) estimates from $3.69 to $3.65, but raised its fiscal 2014 AFFO estimates from $4.25 to $4.50.

American Tower Corp shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Monday. The stock is up 22.83% year-to-date.

First up is Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB), the $2.2 billion hotel owner with 14 hotels under its umbrella. The firm started off the year rallying hard, climbing more than 14% from the start of January to early March. Since then, shares have been slugging sideways. But the sideways moves are laying the framework for a second rally leg in PEB this May. Here's how to trade it:

Pebblebrook is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $35, and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as PEB bounces in between those two technical price levels, it's getting squeezed closer to a breakout above that $35 price ceiling. When that breakout happens, we've got a buy signal.

Momentum adds some confidence to the staying power in PEB's eventual breakout -- 14-day RSI has been making higher lows since early February, well before the triangle pattern started forming in Pebblebrook's price. That said, it's crucial to wait for this stock to catch a bid above $35 before putting cash in the trade.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Small-cap hotel investment REIT Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (PEB) is setting up a similar pattern to the one in EXR -- with a few exceptions.

PEB isn't forming an ascending triangle; support isn't in the same sort of uptrend in this stock. Instead, PEB is forming a rounding pattern with resistance at $28. Rounding patterns look just like they sound -- they indicate a shift in control from sellers to buyers. While this setup is most common as a "bottoming" pattern, PEB's price action doesn't change the implications if shares can break out above $28. That's our buy signal.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of buyers and sellers. Triangles, rectangles and other price pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in this stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That resistance line at $28 is a price where there's an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to take recent gains and sell their shares than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes the move above it so significant -- a breakout indicates that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level. Wait for that signal to happen before you jump into this stock.

In a perfect world, an investor could simply look at a company's history and its plausible earnings forecasts, and jump in (or out) knowing the stock's current price basically made sense with respect to past and future performance. We don't live or trade in a perfect world though. In the world we're actually in right now, most stocks, sectors, and industries have run up far beyond a justifiable value... perhaps except for hotel and lodging REIT stocks Host Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:HST), Strategic Hotels and Resorts Inc. (NYSE:BEE), and Pebblebrook Hotel Trust (NYSE:PEB).
