Best Income Companies To Own For 2014

If you're 55 and fearing that the only way to rescue your retirement is a time machine, you are not alone. You're also not out of options.

The typical household made up of Americans in the 55-to-64 age range has accumulated only enough retirement assets $120,000 to produce $400 to $500 of income a month to add to Social Security payments, according to the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances. If that sounds shockingly low, it is.

You've lost the advantage of time, which helps people in their 20s and 30s to use the power of compounding interest to reach their retirement goals, but you do have other financial tools at your disposal. The most powerful lever: capping or reducing consumption. Every dollar you don't spend in your 50s, after your kids fly the nest, pays you back twofold. Not only can you save it now, you won't feel the need of it later.

Yesterday after the market closed, small cap supermarket stock The Fresh Market Inc (NASDAQ: TFM) reported earnings and began rising more than 10% in after hours trading, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock along with theperformance of other supermarket stocks like SUPERVALU Inc (NYSE: SVU) and Whole Foods Market, Inc (NASDAQ: WFM) that have had or are having their share of troubles.

Short sellers had a tough time in 2013. William Ackman’s bet again Herbalife (HLF), which has gained 139% this year, went horribly bad, while other heavily shorted stocks, including Supervalu (SVU) and Netflix (NFLX), have posted gains that make that look paltry.

Advisors' Opinion:

    Hanging up on mobile growth
If there's been one stock suffering from a bout of manic investor behavior, it's Internet security specialist VirnetX Holdings (NYSEMKT: VHC  ) , which has found its stock bouncing all over the market. Following a patent infringement win over Apple late last year, shares soared, only to crash miserably after losing a similar case to Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) , with its shares losing nearly a quarter their value. It was as if all the wheels had fallen off the gravy train it was riding to collecting royalties on its wireless patents.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) extremely simple workaround for VirnetX's (NYSEMKT: VHC  ) networking patents reveal how easily the company's claims can be ignored. Add in a recent court victory by Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) over many of the same VirnetX claims, and the cracks in the patent trolling strategy start to show.

  • [By Richard Lomas]

Further declines in profit margins will most likely cause further declines in share price. One key upcoming event could have a significant impact on Apple's profit margin, the setting of a royalty rate for Apple's products that infringe on Virnetx (VHC) patents. Apple was sued by Virnetx for infringing on its data security patents with the trial concluding in November, 2012, with a Virnetx victory. After many motions and negotiations no settlement has been reached between Virnetx and Apple. Judge Davis is expected to rule shortly (probably within the next two weeks) on a royalty rate for the offending products. The royalty rate could be set anywhere between .5% to 1.5% and possibly even more. As this royalty rate will apply to all infringing products, (iPhone, iPad, and others supporting Face Time and iMessage), this will have a direct effect on Apple's profit margin which will also impact stock price.

What: Shares of VirnetX (NYSEMKT: VHC  ) have jumped today by as much as 12% after the company announced that it has identified an additional developing specification related to its 3GPP LTE, SAE project.

Advisors' Opinion:

Although the market seems to be losing traction, and even losing ground now, the same can't be said of every single stock. A handful of stocks like China Jo-Jo Drugstores Inc. (NASDAQ:CJJD), Vuzix Corp. (OTCBB:VUZI), and Adamis Pharmaceuticals Corp. (NASDAQ:ADMP) are forging ahead, doling out gains against the grain. Not that moving higher while other names are moving lower is a sure sign that ADMP, VUZI, and CJJD will remain in their uptrends indefinitely, but it sure doesn't hurt their odds. Here's a closer look at each one and why you'd want to add them to your watchlist.
