Hot Value Companies To Watch For 2014

When you think about investing money in good companies, there are typically two ways to invest: Equity (ownership, such as stock) or Debt (lending, such as bonds). The amount of risk that you are willing to accept, coupled with your desired return, will determine which investments are more suitable for your needs. As a shareholder (equity ownership), you can be rewarded with dividends and stock price increases, but this all comes with the price of risk. With a debt investment, most investors seek a stable fixed-income investment that produces a systematic payout or yield. As corporations make a profit, some of this income might be distributed to shareholders as a dividend or interest payments to bondholders. Or, it might be retained (reinvested back into the company) or used to retire debt - this is generally decided by the board of directors.

Pay Dividends or Retain Earnings?
As you study different companies, they generally fall into one of two styles: growth or value. Companies are also sometimes referred to as ividend & Income Stocksor rowth Stocks Growth companies have strong earnings potential; therefore, theye typically higher-priced companies. Because they focus on growth, they tend to retain more of their earnings than value companies. This allows reinvesting the profits back into the business to promote growth with the goal of increasing the stock price.

    Is the stock looking cheap?
To me, Halliburton currently looks cheaper that its bigger cousin Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) . While Halliburton is trading at 21 times its earnings, and Schlumberger's trading at only 18 times earnings, the reason I'm not too interested in the P/E multiple is that Halliburton's bottom line doesn't reveal its actual profits. Since April 2010, the company has been making provisions for its part in the Macondo oil spill disaster. This has distorted Halliburton's actual earnings considerably.

European large-cap pharmaceuticals like Novartis (NVS) and Bristol Meyers Squibb (BMY) count amongst some of our favorite stocks right now, as do U.S. multinationals that are growing revenue and margins in Asia Tupperware (TUP) is a shining example. Stay away from utilities and energy stocks, as they are likely to be the laggards over the next year.

Susan Walsh/APSen. Carl Levin of Michigan. WASHINGTON -- Caterpillar executives defended a tax strategy Tuesday that has saved the manufacturing giant billions in U.S. taxes. They got support from Republican senators, including one who said the company deserves an award. Caterpillar (CAT) has avoided paying $2.4 billion in U.S. taxes since 2000 by shifting profits to a wholly-controlled affiliate in Switzerland, according to a report released by Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich. Levin chairs the Senate investigations subcommittee. On Tuesday, Levin grilled Caterpillar executives and their accountants at a hearing on the company's tax strategy. "Caterpillar is an American success story that produces iconic industrial machines," Levin said. "But it is also a member of the corporate profit-shifting club that has transferred billions of dollars offshore to avoid paying U.S. taxes." Julie Lagacy, a Caterpillar vice president, was adamant that the Peoria, Ill.-based manufacturer follows all tax laws. "We pay everything we owe," she told the subcommittee. Caterpillar got support from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who questioned why the subcommittee was even holding the hearing. "I think rather than having an inquisition, we should probably bring Caterpillar here and give them an award," Paul said. "You know, they've been in business for over 100 years. It's not easy to stay in business." Paul said Caterpillar and its accountants have an obligation to shareholders to minimize their taxes. "It is a requirement that you try to minimize your costs. So rather than chastising Caterpillar we should be complimenting them," Paul said. Caterpillar is the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, with sales and revenues last year of nearly $56 billion. The company says it has increased U.S. employment by 13,000 jobs since 1999, growing to nearly 52,000 workers last year. The company says it has 118,000 employees in 21 countries. In the U.S., it has 69 ma

Gabriel Bouys, AFP/Getty ImagesBill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. $650 million is a lot of money -- even for Bill Gates. That's how much his investment firm has invested in what might be considered the best way to play China. It's not a software firm or even a computer hardware firm. It's mining giant Caterpillar (CAT). Gates started building a position in Caterpillar before the financial crisis, but he became a very aggressive buyer once the crisis hit and shares had fallen by half. Yet remarkably, Gates has kept on buying, even as shares steadily rebounded to previous peaks. But now that Caterpillar has come under pressure on concerns that China is slowing, is Gates locking in profits? No, he's been buying more, picking up another 500,000 shares in this year's second quarter. At current prices, his firm's stake of 10.76 million shares is worth a cool $650 million. The key question: Why does Gates continue to buy shares even after China's slowdown has signaled the potential end of a global commodities boom? After all, much of Caterpillar's growth in recent years has come from a strong surge in mining activity that uses the company's massive excavators. The simple answer is that Gates and his team of investment managers always focus on long-term winners and never buy or sell shares based on short-term economic shifts. We've seen him do it many times before. For example, even as Wall Street analysts focused on the near-term prospects for auto retailer AutoNation (AN), Gates saw an epic rebound coming, as I noted in this article. Shares of AutoNation have now risen 400 percent since early 2009. Caterpillar: The Long View

While the U.S. economy is sitting pretty as China slows, things aren't so black-and-white for American companies. Leading manufacturers such as Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) have seen China as a major opportunity for growth in future years on the back of the country's previous growth. While the U.S. rebound and housing recovery should help Caterpillar, a major Chinese infrastructure investment would have propelled this company -- and the industrial sector as a whole -- back up the charts. That obviously won't happen if China's economy keeps falling and its manufacturing sector continues to be mired in contraction territory.

    Costly market share gains
The problem is that Family Dollar has had to pay up for its increasing market share and sales levels. The company's gross profit margin fell by more than a full percentage point, to 34.7% last quarter. In contrast, Dollar Tree (NASDAQ: DLTR  ) booked an expansion of profits, to 35.2%, continuing a trend that's seen it pull away from Family Dollar.

This isn some growing new industry set to take the world further into the 21st century. It an old concept that hasn innovated, won innovate, and will slowly but surely die out over this century. When I walk into a Walgreens, I see a miniature Target (TGT), a more expensive Dollar Tree (DLTR), and a provider of prescriptions in a world where everything is becoming mail order.
