Hot New Companies To Watch In Right Now

The "Un-carrier" is going all out with an aggressive marketing campaign, targeting iPhone users on other networks. T-Mobile is now accepting trade-ins for older iPhone models, which can help offset the down payment on a new iPhone 5 on its network. It turns out Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) is now doing the same thing.

Sorry, prospective U.S. upgraders. This deal isn't for you. We're talking about Indian consumers that now have the option to trade in any smartphone through an Apple reseller to help offset the cost of a new iPhone, according to a recent report from The Times of India. It's the latest is a string of initiatives that Apple is pursuing in the world's second-largest country by population to boost sales.

It's the first time that Apple's ever offered such a program that targets competing products. The Mac maker has long had a recycling program primarily for its own gear, issuing gift cards for Apple products on their deathbeds. Apple will accept old products made by other manufacturers, but simply recycles them without offering any credit.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

New to market is SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , which had its IPO late last year, and has behind it Elon Musk, a green-power entrepreneur. Bulls are intrigued by SolarCity's disruptive possibilities, as it helps consumers bypass traditional utility companies with its solar offerings. The company is also partnering with major entities such ascarmakers and Wal-Martto provide solar technology. On the other hand, it's not profitable, and is burning through a lot of cash.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Score one for Forbes, at the expense of Barron's. With today's big jump from SolarCity Corp. (NASDAQ:SCTY) shares, an article appearing on the latter's website a few weeks ago alluded to the possibility that the company might need to raise funds to meet certain obligations ... the last thing shareholders want to hear. A few hours later, a commentary at the former's website swooped in to repair the damage being done to SCTY, largely by reframing the issue. Though "right" and "wrong" might be too strong to use as description of how things have played out for the stock in the meantime, using the terms "relevant" and "irrelevant" wouldn't be a stretch - William Pentland's article at Forbes appears to be the more relevant of the two, at least to investors, judging from the stock's action today.

  • [By Rick Munarriz]

However, don't sell Musk short on his ability to justify premium pricing on features that save money over time. That's his strategy at SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) , where solar panel installations are billed monthly at a rate that equates the energy savings over traditional electric power.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Who will win the solar panel battle?
Installers, particularly those in residential, deal with this conundrum every day, and the industry is changing rapidly. SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY  ) has been known to use manufacturers like Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL  ) and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) , who are two of the biggest manufacturers in the world and compete mostly on cost. Where system costs are low, they will win business.
