Top Integrated Utility Companies To Watch In Right Now

In a sell-side world where Underperform/Sell ratings are pretty rare, is a bit of exception, as several analysts have either recommended that investors sell St. Jude Medical (NYSE:STJ) or have issued what I'd call eutral but we really mean sellcalls. Many of these analysts believe that St. Jude is going to see serious share loss in cardiac rhythm management (pacemakers and ICDs) due to safety problems with the leads, but that just hasn't happened. But with CRM revenue holding up, they're increasingly turning to worrying about earnings quality and long-term growth potential.

Although I think St. Jude shares have gotten a little expensive, I think the bears are going to have to work harder to make their case. Simply put, while St. Jude isn't even close to the most dynamic name in med-tech, it's doing better than the bears want to acknowledge. So although I expect another round of attempts to talk down the numbers/performance, I still see more opportunities for the company to do better in the coming years.

When traders think of an IP (intellectual property) company, they tend to conjure up names like InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), VirnetX Holding Corporation (NYSEMKT:VHC), or of course, the well-known Vringo, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNG). And, investors see these patent-enforcement names as such for good reason.... between VRNG, IDCC, and VHC, the three organizations own well over 20,000 technology patents, and their efforts to enforce them have been well-documented, and well publicized. Thing is, as the patent-protection industry matures, companies like Vringo, InterDigital, or VirnetX Holding may well find that it's the quality of the patent portfolio rather than the quantity of patents that makes an IP owner a potent investment. Enter Endeavor IP Inc. (OTCBB:ENIP).

Small cap patent stocks Spherix Inc (NASDAQ: SPEX), PDL BioPharma Inc (NASDAQ: PDLI) and Endeavor IP Inc (OTCBB: ENIP) are among thegrowing number of publicly tradedUS entities focused on collecting and making money from various types of patents. After all, monetizing patents can lead to incredible returns. For example: Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund wrote in a research note back in November that Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is generating $2 billion per year in revenue from Android patent royalties and heestimates that this revenue has a 95% margin. However, there are risks associated with investing in stocks that invest in patents because a bi-partisan bill called the Innovation Act (H.R. 3309) isworking its way through Congress to try and reign in the activities of so-called"patent trolls" or rather companies that buy or license patents from others.

They say a company is judged by the company it keeps. What's less said - though never disputed - is that a company is equally judged by the kind of talent it can attract... winning people tend to only work for winning companies. In that light, the fact that the newest chief of Endeavor IP Inc. (OTCBB:ENIP) is a former executive from the ranks of Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ:RMBS) and Tessera Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:TSRA) should underscore just how seriously the market should be taking ENIP. RMBS and TSRA didn't become large powerhouses by hiring folks who don't know what they're doing, and conversely, the fact that a former Rambus and Tessera Technologies guy was willing to step into the unknown and take the helm at Endeavor IP speaks volumes about the potential of the young company's IP portfolio.

Brookfield Infrastructure has a number of potentially profitable areas for investment around the world but, above all, in infrastructure hungry Emerging Markets (EM) such as Brazil. According to Credit Suisse analysts, in Brazil, funds can be invested at Funds From Operations (FFO) yields above 12%. Therefore, the company's ability to grow its distribution yield, whether through acquisitions or organically, is critical to evaluate the company's value. Moreover, the currently conservative dividend payout ratio should allow Brookfield Infrastructure to self-finance on going opportunities.
