Hot Dividend Stocks To Watch Right Now

After a decade of conflict, the U.S. is cutting back on defense spending and generally pulling back from overseas commitments, with the much-ballyhooed sequester likely to cut orders for big defense firms for years to come.

So why is giant Northrop Grumman (NOC) one of the strongest stocks in the market right now? For three main reasons.

First, the stock is dirt cheap, as investors had priced in their worst fears before the sequester took placeven today, after a decent upmove, shares trade at just 11 times earnings, and the firm pays a dividend of $2.44 annually (2.9% yield).

Second, management has proven deft at boosting profit margins, so earnings are expected to stay north of $7 per share going forward. (Earnings totaled just $3 per share back in 2003.)

In addition, if the performance of the tobacco industry is any gauge, then soft-drink producers such as Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) and PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP  ) have little to fear. It's a bit more complicated than tobacco taxes, however. Blaming increased risk of lung cancer on smoking is much more of a slam-dunk than putting all of the blame of rising obesity rates on sugary drinks alone. So it is easy to see why the two companies and the American Beverage Association spent $70 million on lobbying and advertising from 2009 to 2012 to stamp out proposed sugar taxes in 30 states. Still, I think it's only a matter of time before a state sugar tax successfully passes.

The New York Stock Exchange -- the larger part of NYSE Euronext (NYSE: NYX  ) -- moved into its present home on 18 Broad Street (on the corner of Broad and Wall Street) on April 22, 1903. It was an architectural marvel for its time, with a massive open trading floor without any supporting columns, huge windows, six miles of pneumatic tubes for routing orders, and one of the world's first air-conditioning systems. Even if you've never visited this iconic location, you're probably well-acquainted. It is one of the most famous buildings in the world:

Is it time for a stock buyback at Prospect Capital (NASDAQ: PSEC  ) ?

When business development companies trade substantially below their last-reported net asset values, or NAV, repurchasing shares can be quite beneficial for shareholders. A repurchase allows a BDC to essentially acquire a portfolio of loans and investments at prices below their stated value.

What do Prospect Capital Corporation (NASDAQ:PSEC), Astec Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASTE), and First Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:THFF) have in common? Not much, on the surface. In fact, were it not for something very specific to one particular person (me), they'd have nothing in common at all. This week though, THFF, ASTE, and PSEC all have at least one thing in common, and that's the fact that they're all going into my mental/hypothetical portfolio.
