5 Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ: LOPE  ) were riding high today, gaining as much as 16% after soaring past estimates in its earnings report.

So what: The for-profit educator said revenue jumped 21.3% to $142 million, topping expectations of $137.9 million, and adjusted EPS jumped from $0.32 a year ago to $0.43, $0.04 better than the analyst target. Overall enrollment increased by a solid 15.7%, but the company didn't provide statistics on new enrollment, a widely followed indicator in the education sector.

Now what: No doubt it was a strong quarter for Grand Canyon, which has avoided the struggles of many of its industry peers. In fact, shares have nearly doubled in the past year, but unlike much of the industry, whose shares are going for cheap, Grand Canyon is valued at a P/E of 19. While the stock has continued to move up, it's hard to see what separates Grand Canyon from its peers. I'd stay away until things finish shaking out in the industry.

This is especially useful during lightning strikes and power surges. Its Total Failsafe products offer modular station protectors, while its In-Line products protect broadband coaxial cables.

With Verizon and other cell phone providers upgrading to 4G, Tii’s sales should remain very strong.

The stock is a good buy, but it is thinly traded, so use a limit order within 10 cents of the previous day’s closing price. Buy TIII under $3.

Shares of Bank of America (BAC) closed at $9.49 on Tuesday, returning 71% year-to-date, following an epic 58% decline during 2011. Despite that remarkable run, the shares trade for just 0.7 times the company's Dec. 30 tangible book value of $12.95, and for a relatively low nine times the consensus 2013 EPS estimate of $1.06. KBW analyst Jefferson Harralson rates Bank of America "Market Perform," with a price target of $9.00, and estimates the company will report first-quarter EPS of six cents, followed by full-year earnings of 65 cents, and 2013 EPS of $1.20.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) was the best performer of all 30 DJIA components in 2012. With gains of over 100%, the stock is now overvalued according to Wall St. analysts. Meredith Whitney may have recently upgraded Bank of America, but the year-end consensus price target of $10.60 was implying a negative return of almost 9%. There is at least something positive to say here, and that is that analysts are ratcheting their targets slightly higher already. Thomson Reuters already has lifted its consensus mean target to $11.13. Bank of America only yields 0.3% because it has not been allowed to raise its dividend. What if that changes in 2013?

JPMorgan rates Bank of America as an "Overweight," citing passing of the Fed stress test as confirmation of adequate an capital base and "recent progress on mortgage related issues" and cost restructuring. In the near term, Bank of America should benefit from improved trends in trading, the report argues.

The report added that BofA's valuation remains "attractive" at 0.7x tangible book.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chris Stuart]

Progress Software(PRGS) recently cut its outlook for the fiscal second quarter ended in May, saying execution problems at its EDS (enterprise data solutions) segment would lead to a shortfall.

Mark Schappel from Benchmark Securities (which rates Progress a "buy" with a $31 target) says the shortfall is a speed bump in the company's ongoing transformation, and not a sign of a slump in infrastructure spending.

TheStreet Ratings has a $34 price target on Progress Software.
