5 Best Net Payout Yield Stocks For 2014

CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (CNP) won approval from the Mississippi Public Service Commission for natural gas rate hike, effective immediately. The substantial mismatch between the company actual investment returns from modernization initiatives and allowed return drove the increase in the natural gas rate.

Per this year rate adjustments, it was found that CenterPoint returns were much less than its investments, resulting in the rate hike. Per the new rates, the company residential and small commercial customers will now have to pay an extra $1.58 and $4.00 on monthly bills, respectively.

As a result of this rate increase, the minimum charge for residential customers will be $10.55 per month, up nearly 8% from $9.77. The Mississippi customers will pay 13.2 cents, up 17.8% for every 100 cubic feet of natural gas supplied for pipeline maintenance and to recoup overhead expenses.

To recuperate the cost of natural gas, additional charges included will bring the average monthly residential bill to around $34 with the average base bill rising 11% to $15.83 from $14.25.

Mid cap telco equipment stock Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE: ALU) is up 205.9% since the start of the year for a much better performanceverses peers or benchmarks like Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) or the iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN)meaning its probably worth taking a closer look at the stock as its been producing plenty of good news for a change.I should note that we have recently addedAlcatel Lucent SA to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio as atechnical based trade because we think shares will continue higher on speculationabout animproved global footprintfor this leading mobile data network provider.

Mid cap networking solutions company Brocade Communications Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: BRCD) has pretty much been a sleeper for investors since the dot.com bust, but that has changed over the past yearmeaning its worth revisiting the stock along with potential performance benchmarkslike QLogic Corporation (NASDAQ: QLGC), Emulex Corporation (NYSE: ELX) and iShares North American Tech-Multimedia Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). I should mention that we have recently Brocade Communications Systems to our SmallCap Network Elite Opportunity (SCN EO) portfolio because the company has successfully transitioned from being a hardware company to supporting virtual networks via software and it continues to offer best-of-breed technology.

Just before Thanksgiving, small cap networking stock Infoblox Inc (NYSE: BLOX) sank 28.65% on guidance that was below expectations, but the stock has still outperformed the year-to-dateperformance ofnetworking ETF like the PowerShares Dynamic Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: PXQ) and iShares S&P North American Networking ETF (NYSEARCA: IGN). Speaking of results ...
Right now, quarterly earnings season is well under way, which provides a perfect opportunity for one of those "check in from time to time" moments. While the iPIG portfolio did nothing last week, several of its picks did report, and those quarterly confessionals can help determine whether the companies are still worth owning. To summarize key results:

United Technologies (NYSE: UTX  ) reported decent numbers, with net earnings ahead of expectations but growth driven more by acquisitions than by organic improvements in its existing businesses. Given the company's conglomerate setup, growth by bolt-on acquisitions isn't surprising, but over the long haul, it'd be better to see its businesses growing internally as well as through acquisitions. The news at Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) wasn't quite as good, with both revenues and net earnings falling from year ago levels on a tough environment for the mining businesses it supports. That's a risk well known to the company and its shareholders, though, and while the weaker results did knock the company's stock down, the business has ridden through tough cycles before. It looks capable of riding through this one, too. Hasbro (NASDAQ: HAS  ) , on the other hand, reported earnings that beat expectations on an operating basis, before restructuring charges knocked it down to a net loss. Given that the company is in the very seasonal toy business, that loss in an off-peak quarter is much less of a concern than it would have been in the make-or-break holiday quarter. UPS (NYSE: UPS  ) kept on trucking, with a better-than-expected January and strength from eCommerce helping the company turn in an 8% growth in net reported earnings per share. Overall, UPS is operating efficiently, though its future success is tied to its ability to continue delivering more packages. As long as its e-commerce business continues to grow, though, UPS is wel

The third biggest gainer for the IPIG portfolio last week was safety-equipment purveyor Mine Safety Appliances (NYSE: MSA  ) , which also rose on its earnings news. Mine Safety Appliances' numbers were pretty strong, once you backed out the impact of currency fluctuations and a divestiture, and the market rewarded the company for those results. Solid results like that are also a decent reason for a company's stock to rise, but of course, what the company delivers in the future will drive where its stock goes next.

On behalf of most of my clients in 2013, I chose to overweight tech and health care. However, I did so with areas that are traditionally less volatile. I continue to own Powershares Pharmaceuticals (PJP) and/or SPDR Select Healthcare (XLV). I’ve been a proponent of “old tech” with the attractive prices and dividends; First Trust NASDAQ Tech Dividend (TDIV) fits the bill. Additionally, I have remained faithful to iShares Small Cap Value (IJS) for small-cap exposure, rather than hop on the IWO express.
