Top 10 Regional Bank Stocks To Buy For 2014

As the stock market is challenging all-time highs around a holiday week, investors have to be considering how to position their portfolios and assets for 2014 and beyond. 24/7 Wall St. has been issuing value outlooks and sector outlooks for 2014 to see where the best spots are ahead.

It turns out that there may be some incredible upside left in selective autos and biotechs. Some financial stocks may offer upside, and there is still some value in oil and gas. We will be following up with more 2014 outlook pieces in December.

The best carmaker for 2014 appears to be General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM). With the government out of the shares, its stock muted since its re-IPO and an attractive earnings multiple of only eight times expected earnings in 2014, GM was the winner against peers. By the way, analysts see more than 25% gains on average in GM’s share price over the next year.

Regions Financial Corp. (NYSE: RF) is a top pick at Jefferies for 2014 in its most recent sector and themes trend reportfor the year ahead. The super-regional bank is the 15th largest one in the United States, and its net interest margin keeps moving up. Regions’ consensus analyst price target is posted up about $1 from current prices, implying gains of 10% over the coming year.

Investors love stocks that consistently beat the Street without getting ahead of their fundamentals and risking a meltdown. The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) fit the bill? Let's take a look at what its recent results tell us about its potential for future gains.

  • [By Caroline Bennett]

One of Jamba's (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) shareholders, CanBa Investments LLC, has converted the remainder of its preferred shares into common stock, the company announced Tuesday, which means Jamba no longer has to pay the annual 8% expense for its dividend.

International investors have recently gotten a lot more interested in currency-hedged ETFs. But what are currency-hedged ETFs, and how can you decide whether they belong in your portfolio? (NYSEMKT: DXJ  )

  • [By Will Ashworth]

Anyone who follows ETFs likely knows about WETF. That because its WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity Fund (DXJ) gathered $9.5 billion in 2013, making it the second-most-popular fund next to the SPY. I recently gave it kudos for being one of the best funds in 2013 and although the DXJ is responsible for a considerable amount of WisdomTree growth in 2013, there are other reasons why I think this is one of the best asset managers anywhere.

  • [By Tom Aspray]

The recent plunge in China (FXI) puts it down 8% and even the hedged Yen Japan ETF (DXJ) has lost almost 5% in just a week or so.

In last week's column, Souring Sentiment Will Help Stocks, I discussed how the sentiment needed to become more negative in order to create a good buying opportunity. Last week's action is a step in the right direction as despite the market bullishness in December, I thought that the risk was high and that only selective buying was warranted.

  • [By Philip Springer, President, Retirement Wealth Management, Inc.]

The other alternative is WisdomTree Japan Hedged Equity (DXJ). As the name suggests, it's the better alternative when the yen is declining. This fund is up 23% so far in 2013, compared with 15.5% for the iShares ETF.

The company was founded in 1959 and is based in Concord, North Carolina.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Patricio Kehoe]

The motorsports industry is a natural monopoly at the local level, since only one racetrack can hold NASCAR events in each market, and until now, International Speedway has won this battle. Nevertheless, over the past five years, this company has suffered under declining ticket and concession spending, due to a weak demographic fan base located in troubled geographies. Although recent racetrack changes and customer stabilization will leave ISCA well positioned when spending power increases once again, this is bound to happen at a slow pace. However, the distinct properties of each racetrack attract high brand loyalty, and have compelled competitors like Speedway Motorsports Inc. (TRK) to focus business on completely different markets, therefore posing no real threat to ISCA.

Top 10 Regional Bank Stocks To Buy For 2014: mCig Inc (MCIG)

MCIG, INC. (mCig), incorporated on December 30, 2010, is a development-stage company. The Company is a technology company. The Company focused on two long-term secular trends sweeping the globe: the decriminalization and legalization of marijuana for medicinal or recreational purposes and the adoption of electronic vaporizing cigarettes (eCigs).

The mCig provides a smoking experience by heating (not burning) plant material, waxes, and oils delivering a smoother inhalation experience. As of October 31, 2013, the Company did not generate any revenues.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Joel Elconin]

One such example is mCig (OTC: MCIG).

CIG started off with a $10 vape pen," he said. "They almost envision themselves as being the Apple of the industry. CEO and founder Paul Rosenberg [is] strictly a businessman, he owns about half the stock. He then brought on some talent and gave them his stock to help the company. Why? Because he knows the stock is overvalued, but if you can [evolve a company] without diluting your shareholders, that's what I mean by doing the right thing./p>

  • [By Jason Shubnell]

He also discussed MCIG (OTC: MCIG), a relatively new company that has developed a legal marijuana vaporizer, similar to the e-cig. The mCig heats plant material instead of burning it, providing a superior method of consumption that is much smoother, according to the company's website. The product sells for $10, while the stock itself has a market cap of $35 million.

  • [By John Udovich]

After marijuana, the electronic cigarette sector and e-Cig stocks or industry playerslikeReynolds American, Inc (NYSE: RAI), mCig Inc (OTCBB: MCIG), Victory Electronic Cigarettes Corp (OTCMKTS: ECIG) and American Heritage International Inc (OTCBB: AHII) is looking like the next hot niche sector for investors. However, electronic cigarette stock investors should be aware of the followingrecent good and bad news from the sector that needs to be digested:

  • [By John Udovich]

Last week, I talked about small cap electronic cigarette stocks Vapor Corp (OTCMKTS: VPCO) and Hop-On Inc (OTCMKTS: HPNN) as being among the last of the e-Cigstocks not controlled by ig Tobacco, but Victory Electronic Cigarettes Corp (OTCMKTS: ECIG), mCig Inc (OTCBB: MCIG) and American Heritage International (OTCBB: AHII)are alsopositioning themselves or their technology to exploit opportunities in the e-Cig market or even inmarijuana or cannabis. Last year, industry experts were already saying thatUS retail sales of e-cigarettes could reach $1 billion for the yearfor roughly1% of the country's cigarette market. That number might appear small, but its more than double 2012 salesas sales increasinglymove off the Internet and into more mainstream retailers thanks to their positioning as aealthieralternative to smoking.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Meanwhile, for telecoms, strong demand for smartphones, and steps to try to contain costs, are helping earnings prospects. Both AT&T and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) have taken steps to align the upgrade cycle with the 24-month contractual commitments that smartphone-buyers take on, alleviating part of the subsidy penalties that the companies suffer in offering upfront discounts when customers get new phones. In the long run, both companies might need to look abroad for further gains, but for now, they're making the most of what they have.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Telecom giants AT&T (NYSE: T  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) have both posted gains of about 1.5%. Speculation about international expansion has raised interest in both companies lately, as Verizon is reportedly looking northward at a potential acquisition of Canada's Wind Mobile, while AT&T yesterday spurred rumors that it might seek to buy Spain's Telefonica. Of the two, Verizon's Canadian buyout would be much less complicated: The relatively small size of Wind Mobile makes an acquisition quite manageable. Both ideas make it clear, though, that opportunities in the U.S. market are starting to reach a saturation point, forcing the American giants to look elsewhere for growth.

  • [By Alex Planes]

ITG analyst Joe Fersedi noted that the Z10 launch was lousy and only got worse, with sales in line with older BlackBerry models. The Z10 initially claimed 4% share of the sales in Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) stores and 7% in AT&T (NYSE: T  ) stores, but now its share of those carriers' sales has shriveled to 1% and 2%, respectively. Detwiler analyst Jeff Johnston noted that he had never seen a launch where returns exceeded sales prior to the Z10. On the other hand, Johnston expects BlackBerry's keyboard-equipped Q10 to perform better. At least BlackBerry has a niche. Will this optimism bear out in light of the reported dislike of the BlackBerry 10 OS?

  • [By Travis Hoium]

One big mover on the Dow today is Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) , which has fallen 0.7%. There was initial euphoria over the prospect of Verizon buying out the 45% stake in Verizon Wireless owned by Vodafone (NASDAQ: VOD  ) , but that has worn off over the past two days. The prospect of a $130 billion buyout is daunting, especially when you consider that Verizon might have to take on $60 billion of debt in the process.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Antè´¸nio Costa]

China BAK Battery Inc. (NASDAQ: CBAK) still looks pretty good on the technical daily chart with volume expanding as it moves higher, MACD crossover too. CBAK continues to look bullish and had a decent day Friday. ( click to enlarge )

  • [By Bryan Murphy]

It's fun to be right, but there's such a thing as being a little too right, too fast. Such is the case with China BAK Battery Inc. (NASDAQ:CBAK) ... a stock yours truly was touting as a buy-worthy ticker just two days ago following news from Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) that it was getting into the battery-pack business so it could become its own supplier for its electric vehicle business (Tesla automobiles need a huge battery pack to run). If there was enough demand for a carmaker to get into the game, then surely it meant there was enough potential business for an established battery market to bear plenty of fruit for CBAK too.
