I'm Still Adding Netgear to My Portfolio

Early last week, Fool contributor Steve Symington wrote that he would soon buy shares of Netgear (NASDAQ: NTGR  ) in his personal portfolio.

Then, the following day, shares of Netgear fell nearly 7% after analysts at Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to "Sell," citing the declining U.S. market for wireless networking equipment.

Even so, Steve says in the following interview with the Fool's Erin Miller, that doesn't change the argument for being bullish on Netgear stock, especially when you account for emerging markets growth and Netgear's entrance into the 4G LTE mobile device market.

What do you think? Please watch the video to get Steve's take, and then let us know whether you think Netgear is still worth your investing dollars.

Chart: How Many Homes Does D.R. Horton Sell?

Sometimes, the most important data about a company is the hardest to come by. In this case, I'm referring to historic sales figures from D.R. Horton (NYSE: DHI  ) , the nation's largest homebuilder by units sold. While this is the single-most accurate reflection of D.R. Horton's performance -- not to mention, it provides valuable insight into the condition of the overall housing market -- a comprehensive data set containing the figures is nowhere to be found.

It's for this reason I decided to share the chart below. In the midst of conducting research on the broader economy, I dug through D.R. Horton's quarterly filings to discover how its unit sales are recovering from the downturn. And the answer, as you can see for yourself, is: slowly.

Source: Quarterly filings.

While the performance of one company may seem inconsequential, it's important to keep in mind that, as I mentioned above, D.R. Horton is the nation's largest homebuilder by number of units sold, and as my colleague Morgan Housel has noted, "there hasn't been a strong economy without a strong housing market in modern history."

I like the financials in the US right now. There's going to be some consolidation until you end up with your few big nationwide guys, similar to the situation in Canada. It just makes sense from a business standpoint and a consumer standpoint. If I move from Flint Michigan to Austin Texas, it's nice if I don't have to switch banks. And if you're a bank, it's nice not to only be operating in Flint.

5 Reasons to Worry About Next Week

The economy is showing signs of fumbling the recovery.

For starters, mortgage rates are starting to creep higher. The 30-year rate is closing in on 4%, making it the highest level in a year. As cheap financing dries up, where do you think housing prices and the purchase of other big-ticket items will go?

The news isn't just iffy on the macro level. There are also more than a few companies that aren't pulling their own weight in this supposed economic recovery.

There are still plenty of names that aren't growing their earnings. Let's go over a few of the companies that are expected to go the wrong way on the bottom line next week.

Clearing the table
Let's start at the top with Lululemon. This may be a surprise. Isn't this the upscale yoga apparel retailer that's been posting monster growth in recent years? Yes, that's all true, but we can't forget the Luon pants fiasco that erupted in mid-March. The chain had to pull stock of its black Luon pants because the sheerness made them practically see-through. It was an embarrassing episode that took place midway through the company's fiscal quarter.

The chain only recently began restocking all but one of the styles that were pulled, and early on the retailer warned that it would sting the bottom line. Analysts see healthy revenue growth of 19%, but they see profitability dipping slightly.

Oxford Industries is also in the apparel business, but it didn't have any see-through scandals to work through. Oxford is the company behind Tommy Bahama tropical shirts, Lilly Pulitzer dresses, and other branded clothing items.

Analysts see a small uptick in revenue at Oxford, but they also see profitability dropping sharply. If the pros seem pessimistic in holding out for just $0.78 a share on Tuesday, keep in mind that these same analysts overestimated Oxford's profitability in the two previous quarters.

Synutra is a leading seller of infant formula in China. Naturally, this would seem to be a big business given China's place as the world's most populous nation. However, Wall Street sees revenue falling 7% for the quarter.

It gets worse. If you think that Oxford is on a mean streak after coming up short relative to expectations in the two previous quarters, Synutra missed analyst profit targets every single quarter last year.

You won't find too many people tuning in to hear Smithfield's financials later in the week. The producer of pork and other meat products agreed to a $4.7 billion buyout by Shuanghui International Holdings last week. A bad report is unlikely to sway Shuanghui. There's a reason Smithfield made itself available, after all, and it's a safe bet that both companies know what's coming in next Friday's report. Analysts see quarterly income coming in flat with last year's showing.

Finally, we have KMG Chemical. The producer of electronic- and wood-treating chemicals is expected to see profitability dip by a third next week.

KMG is doing something about that. Earlier this week it completed its $63.3 million purchase of OM Group's Ultra Pure Chemicals subsidiary. When organic growth isn't enough, acquisitions can often help. Despite the uninspiring projected bottom-line showing, shares of KMG hit a fresh high just last week.

Why the long face, short-seller?
These companies have seen better days. The market has rewarded many of these stocks with reasonable gains over the past year, but they still haven't earned those upticks. Lower earnings translates into higher earnings multiples, and nobody wants to see that happen.

The good news here is that Wall Street already expects these companies to deliver shrinking bottom lines. In other words, the bad news is already baked into the shares.

The more I think about it, the less worried I become.

3 reasons to get excited about next week and beyond
With the American markets reaching new highs, investors and pundits alike are skeptical about future growth. They shouldn't be. Many global regions are still stuck in neutral, and their resurgence could result in windfall profits for select companies. A recent Motley Fool report, "3 Strong Buys for a Global Economic Recovery" outlines three companies that could take off when the global economy gains steam. Click here to read the full report!

Why Monro Muffler Brake Shares Fell

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Monro Muffler Brake (NASDAQ: MNRO  ) were going in reverse today, falling as much as 11% after missing on all counts in its earnings report.

So what: The auto-repair service provider posted earnings per share of $0.42, below the analyst consensus at $0.45, while revenue growth of 21.9%, to $206.2 million, was not enough to match estimates of $210.5 million. Nearly all of that growth came from acquisition, as comparable sales rose just 1.2% in the quarter. Gross margin also fell 200 points due to a change in the sales mix toward lower-margin tires. Finally, Monro's EPS guidance for the current quarter at $0.41-$0.45 was below estimates of $0.47, and it lowered its full-year guidance from $1.65-$1.80, to $1.58-$1.70.

Now what: Management expressed confidence in the company's long-term prospects, but said that customers were putting off more expensive maintenance and repairs, pressuring sales. CEO John Van Heel also said that, over time, the company will be able to integrate the recently acquired stores to further drive profitability. I don't see any structural weakness here, but shares appear to have gotten ahead of themselves, up nearly 50% at one point this year. Monro may need a few extra quarters to grow into that valuation.

With the auto industry coming back strong, savvy investors are looking to China. It's already the world's largest auto market -- and it's set to grow even bigger in coming years. A recent Motley Fool report, "2 Automakers to Buy for a Surging Chinese Market," names two global giants poised to reap big gains that could drive big rewards for investors. 5 Best Cheap Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of Grand Canyon Education (NASDAQ: LOPE  ) were riding high today, gaining as much as 16% after soaring past estimates in its earnings report.

So what: The for-profit educator said revenue jumped 21.3% to $142 million, topping expectations of $137.9 million, and adjusted EPS jumped from $0.32 a year ago to $0.43, $0.04 better than the analyst target. Overall enrollment increased by a solid 15.7%, but the company didn't provide statistics on new enrollment, a widely followed indicator in the education sector.

Now what: No doubt it was a strong quarter for Grand Canyon, which has avoided the struggles of many of its industry peers. In fact, shares have nearly doubled in the past year, but unlike much of the industry, whose shares are going for cheap, Grand Canyon is valued at a P/E of 19. While the stock has continued to move up, it's hard to see what separates Grand Canyon from its peers. I'd stay away until things finish shaking out in the industry.

  • [By John Reese]

Tii Network Technologies (NASDAQ: TIII) helps protect expensive telecom equipment with its overvoltage surge protection devices. This is especially useful during lightning strikes and power surges. Its Total Failsafe products offer modular station protectors, while its In-Line products protect broadband coaxial cables.

Naturally, large telecom carriers like Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) are big customers and account for 34% of sales. DIRECTV (NASDAQ: DTV), Power & Telephone Supply and Tyco Electronics (NYSE: TEL) are also customers. With Verizon and other cell phone providers upgrading to 4G, Tii’s sales should remain very strong.

The stock is a good buy, but it is thinly traded, so use a limit order within 10 cents of the previous day’s closing price. Buy TIII under $3.

Shares of Bank of America (BAC) closed at $9.49 on Tuesday, returning 71% year-to-date, following an epic 58% decline during 2011. Despite that remarkable run, the shares trade for just 0.7 times the company's Dec. 30 tangible book value of $12.95, and for a relatively low nine times the consensus 2013 EPS estimate of $1.06. KBW analyst Jefferson Harralson rates Bank of America "Market Perform," with a price target of $9.00, and estimates the company will report first-quarter EPS of six cents, followed by full-year earnings of 65 cents, and 2013 EPS of $1.20.

Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) was the best performer of all 30 DJIA components in 2012. With gains of over 100%, the stock is now overvalued according to Wall St. analysts. Meredith Whitney may have recently upgraded Bank of America, but the year-end consensus price target of $10.60 was implying a negative return of almost 9%. There is at least something positive to say here, and that is that analysts are ratcheting their targets slightly higher already. Thomson Reuters already has lifted its consensus mean target to $11.13. Bank of America only yields 0.3% because it has not been allowed to raise its dividend. What if that changes in 2013?

JPMorgan rates Bank of America as an "Overweight," citing passing of the Fed stress test as confirmation of adequate an capital base and "recent progress on mortgage related issues" and cost restructuring. In the near term, Bank of America should benefit from improved trends in trading, the report argues.

The report added that BofA's valuation remains "attractive" at 0.7x tangible book.

Progress Software(PRGS) recently cut its outlook for the fiscal second quarter ended in May, saying execution problems at its EDS (enterprise data solutions) segment would lead to a shortfall.

Mark Schappel from Benchmark Securities (which rates Progress a "buy" with a $31 target) says the shortfall is a speed bump in the company's ongoing transformation, and not a sign of a slump in infrastructure spending.

TheStreet Ratings has a $34 price target on Progress Software.

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2014

It looks like the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is set to break its run of triple-digit movements -- and take away investors' streak of gains for the week, as well. The blue chip index has turned down by around 25 points as of 2:15 p.m. EDT, with most stocks in the red -- although few Dow members have made big movements on this Friday. It's a nice breather for investors after the volatility of the past few weeks, but expect more of that to come as questions surrounding quantitative easing's inevitable tapering heat up.

The future of stimulus isn't something long-term investors need to worry about, but keeping an eye on stocks is key to maintaining the best portfolio you can. Who's making waves today? Let's catch up on the stories -- and movers -- you need to know about.

Best Blue Chip Stocks To Invest In 2014: Apple Inc.(AAPL)

Apple Inc., together with subsidiaries, designs, manufactures, and markets personal computers, mobile communication and media devices, and portable digital music players, as well as sells related software, services, peripherals, networking solutions, and third-party digital content and applications worldwide. The company sells its products worldwide through its online stores, retail stores, direct sales force, third-party wholesalers, resellers, and value-added resellers. In addition, it sells third-party Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iPod compatible products, including application software, printers, storage devices, speakers, headphones, and other accessories and peripherals through its online and retail stores; and digital content and applications through the iTunes Store. The company sells its products to consumer, small and mid-sized business, education, enterprise, government, and creative markets. As of September 25, 2010, it had 317 retail stores, including 233 stores in the United States and 84 stores internationally. The company, formerly known as Apple Computer, Inc., was founded in 1976 and is headquartered in Cupertino, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Stephen Quickel]

Can Apple Inc. (AAPL) return to the $700 level? Whether its does or not, I suspect that the stock will be one of the outstanding comeback stories during the year ahead.

Indeed, even if it rebounds to $600 or so, that's a 20% gain. Most investors would settle for that. And chances are it will do much better over time, given Apple's knack for coming up with new products.

Short sellers have cleaned up since they began bum-rapping Apple in late 2012. Three observations are appropriate:

    1. The short positions, while rising rapidly early in the fall, never amounted to more than a few percent of the outstanding shares at their peak.
    2. The stock was probably overdue for correction, having zoomed 9-fold since March 2009.
    3. The consensus of 50-plus Wall Street analysts covering AAPL still calls for 20%-plus a year earnings growth going forward, with a target price of $762.

Apple, in case you hadn't noticed, is selling iPads and iPhones at record levels while its stock has been under attack, in just about every corner of the world.

  • [By Scott Rothbort]

Apple(AAPL), which I included on my previous list of low-PEG stocks, remains one of the cheapest stocks around. The stock has still managed to increase in value over 16% this year, despite falling 12% since reaching an all-time high in October.

The iPhone 4S is a huge success. In 2012, the iPhone 5 and iPad 3 are likely to get introduced. The company's computers continue to grab market share away from Windows-based systems. The December quarter is expected to be the company's best ever. Earnings are expected to grow by 25% in 2011 and 12% in 2012. Yet the stock trades at just under 10 times 2012 earnings.

    52-Week High: $701.91

    52-Week Low: $362.02

    Annual Sales: $108.3 bill.

Projected Earnings Growth: 23% annually over the next five years

Apple led Kiplinger’s list of top stocks back in January 2011, when its share price was a mere $330. And at more than double that price today, Apple shares still appear to be bargain-priced.

The stock has a number of additional catalysts. The company just won a patent suit against arch rival Samsung that is likely to force Apple’s key competitors to revamp their handsets. The verdict couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. Millions of Apple loyalists are ready to upgrade to Apple’s new iPhone, introduced on September 12. Moreover, Apple has barely cracked China’s market, which is likely to generate additional profit growth for years to come.

Of course, Apple can’t maintain an astronomical growth rate forever. But even if the company can simply achieve analysts' expectations for the next three to five years, you’ll want to have the stock in your portfolio for a long time to come.

  • [By Jim Jubak]

Not all my picks for 2013 are riding trends. Some, including Apple (AAPL), make their own trends. If Apple's remarkable and maddening stock performance in 2012 demonstrated anything, it was that this stock dances to its own music. Apple shares are capable of climbing when everything else is tumbling and of plunging while the rest of the market is slowly moving ahead.

The stock ended 2012 in deep retreat as sentiment, rather than fundamentals, turned against it. (And sentiment on this baby can quickly go into reverse.) Apple fell from $589 on Nov. 11 to $509 on Dec. 14 -- and that's after a plunge from $702 on Sept. 19 to $526 on Nov. 15.

Investors sold Apple at the end of 2012 on downgrades from Wall Street analysts that cited order reductions to Apple suppliers. But curiously, sellers seem not to have read all the way through these opinions. For example, the analyst at Canaccord Genuity who cut his target price to $750 from $800 (while maintaining a buy rating) wrote that reduced orders to iPhone suppliers could be a result of softer-than-expected sales in international markets or Apple's intention to launch a new iPhone model in June. Other technology analysts, most notably Horace Dediu on Asymco, have argued that Apple is moving to a six-month cycle from a new-model-every-year cycle. This would be a huge change, and I find the argument convincing.

When this company talked about lofty EPS for 2015, initially the street was skeptical especially after IBM reported a blah quarter soon after the expectations were laid out. I now think the company has $20 earnings per share capabilities out three years and that $13 is doable for 2011. You keep the multiple the same and you get a $169 stock. I think it does just that. This one's cheap, way too cheap and it will be cheap next year, too, but on a bigger earnings base which is how it can get to my price target.

  • [By Paul]

IBM. Emerging markets are a big growth driver for this computer systems and software provider. He thinks the stock, which recently traded at $93, is worth $120 a share: ''There are some obvious companies that offer much bigger discounts, but you have to incorporate the safety factor. You're getting a premium company here that's a good spot to be in within the tech space."

Chevron (CVX-N94.663.183.48%) is the world's second-largest energy company, after fellow Dow component Exxon Mobil (XOM-N73.951.121.54%).

But, analysts favour Chevron's stock, which receives positive reviews from 76 per cent of researchers in coverage. In contrast, Exxon receives positive reviews from 42 per cent of analysts, ranking third-worst in the Dow. Chevron is scheduled to report fourth-quarter results on Jan. 28. Its third-quarter adjusted earnings tally of $1.87 (reflecting 8.7 per cent year-over-year growth) missed the consensus forecast of $2.15 by 13 per cent, sending shares down modestly. The sales figure, at $49-billion, missed by 1.9 per cent. Chevron has integrated global operations and sells at a peer discount.

Its stock trades at a trailing earnings multiple of 11, a forward earnings multiple of 8.9, a book value multiple of 1.8, a sales multiple of 1 and a cash flow multiple of 6.2, 43 per cent, 52 per cent, 58 per cent, 67 per cent and 32 per cent discounts to oil-and-gas industry averages. Based on forward earnings, Chevron is the fourth cheapest Dow stock. It also pays a 72-cent quarterly dividend, translating to a 3.1 per cent dividend yield, seventh highest in the Dow. It has boosted the payout 7.9 per cent a year, on average, over a three-year span and 10 per cent a year, on average, over a five-year span. Chevron has $15-billion of cash, compared to $11-billion of debt.

Bullish Scenario: Macquarie expects Chevron's stock to rise 21 per cent to $114 in 12 months.

Bearish Scenario: JPMorgan, despite rating Chevron “overweight”, has a $90 target.

  • [By Hawkinvest]

Chevron Corporation (CVX) is a leading integrated energy company with exposure to oil, natural gas, refining, etc. This could be one of the most undervalued stocks in the market. Chevron pays a dividend that beats many other stock and bond yields, plus it has a below market price to earnings ratio of about 8 times earnings. The average stock in the S&P 500 Index currently trades for over 12 times earnings. If oil prices continue to rise, the already healthy profit estimates for Chevron might be too low. With oil prices showing strength this early in the season, Chevron could be poised to beat earnings in the coming months. However, the stock is trading at the upper end of the recent trading range. Recently, it has been possible to buy this stock at about $102 per share, so waiting for dips could pay off.

Here are some key points for CVX:

    Current share price: $104.25

The 52 week range is $85.63 to $110.01

Earnings estimates for 2012: $12.66 per share

Earnings estimates for 2013: $13.20 per share

Annual dividend: $3.42 per share which yields 3.1%

In addition, it offers value-added services, including risk management, issuer processing, loyalty, dispute management, value-added information, and CyberSource-branded services. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Charles Sizemore]

One of the “big picture” economic themes that I expect to play out over 2011 and beyond is the secular shift to a global cashless society.?Though the process is well on its way in the U.S. and Europe, roughly 40% of all transactions are still made with cash and paper checks according to Barron’s.

This means that even in “boring” developed markets, there is ample room for growth in electronic payments. And there is no better company to benefit from this trend than credit card giant Visa (NYSE: V).

5 Best Oil Stocks To Own For 2014

One of the most surprising discoveries of the past decade has been the amount of oil and gas we have in the United States. The shale revolution has not only turned the Bakken and Eagle Ford into black-gold mines, but it has really changed the way that U.S.-based oil and gas companies operate. As we drill into the incredible numbers we'll uncover a hidden opportunity could have investors cashing in for years to come.

It wasn't that long ago that we thought we were about to run out of gas, quite literally. At the start of the decade it was estimated that we had enough natural gas left from conventional gas wells to last us about 12 years. This belief had several companies, including Dominion Energy, building natural gas import terminals. Today, Dominion is working to convert its Cove Point LNG terminal into an export facility because we have more than enough gas to meet our needs. As the following chart shows, the impact of the shales is significant:

Apache Corp (NYSE: APA): APA is the largest US energy stock in Cramer’s trust. As of Feb. 15, the fund owns 1050 shares of APA, which is worth about $113,000. APA is also quite popular among hedge funds. At the end of the third quarter, there were 30 hedge funds with APA positions. Jean-Marie Eveillard’s First Eagle Investment Management had $147 million invested, and Ric Dillon and Boykin Curry were also bullish about the stock, each with more than $100 million invested in APA at the end of September.

We agree with these hedge fund managers. In late January, APA announced that it agreed to acquire Cordillera Energy Partners III LLC for $2.85 billion. Cordillera has nearly 254,000 net acres in the Anadarko Basin of Texas. It also has reserves of 71.5 million barrels of oil equivalent and its current net production is about 18,000 barrels per day. The acquisition will also provide APA with about 14,000 potential drilling locations. APA is already trading at attractive multiples. Its forward P/E ratio is 8.78 and its EPS is expected to grow at 11.22% on the average per year over the next five years. So its P/E ratio for 2014 is only 7.02.

Top 5 Penny Companies To Buy Right Now

Jamba (NASDAQ: JMBA  ) investors had better not get too excited when they pull up a stock quote on Monday.

The shares may be trading in the low to mid teens, but it doesn't mean that the smoothie chain operator has come through with a fivefold pop in value. The Jamba Juice parent is simply the latest company to execute a reverse split.

After today's close, Jamba will complete a 1-for-5 reverse split. Every five shares will be exchanged for a single share worth five times as much. In theory, the move should prop up Jamba's share price from $3 to $15, but the value of the company will remain the same. It's a zero-sum game.

Executing a reverse split does have negative connotations, but that's not entirely fair.

A lot of companies going this route are fading companies that have seen their share prices fall below the $1 mark. These penny stocks go through reverse splits to maintain exchange listing requirements, but the fundamentals are still a mess.

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2014: Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited(AEM)

Agnico-Eagle Mines Limited, through its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, development, and production of mineral properties in Canada, Finland, and Mexico. The company primarily explores for gold, as well as silver, copper, zinc, and lead. Its flagship property includes the LaRonde mine located in the southern portion of the Abitibi volcanic belt, Canada. The company was founded in 1953 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Vatalyst]

With headquarters in Canada, Agnico-Eagle is a gold producer that has been around for a while with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico and the United States that has paid a cash dividend for 29 consecutive years. AEM gained 25% over the year and reported 83.5% growth in quarterly earnings. It has a market capitalization of $11.4 billion and a trailing P/E ratio of 34x with expectations of earning $0.55 per share. AEM, like other operators like it, are likely a better bet than ETF trust options like SPDR Gold Shares (GLD).

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2014: Claude Resources Inc.(CGR)

Claude Resources Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, and development of precious metal properties, as well as production and marketing of minerals in Canada. It primarily explores for gold in northern Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario. The company holds interests in the Seabee gold mine located at Laonil Lake, northern Saskatchewan; and the Madsen property that consists of 6 contiguous claim blocks totaling approximately 10,000 acres, located in the Red Lake Mining District of northwestern Ontario. It also holds interest in the Amisk Gold project, which covers an area of 13,800 hectares in the province of Saskatchewan. The company was founded in 1980 and is based in Saskatoon, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Christopher Barker]

Hardly a johnny-come-lately, Claude Resources initiated small-scale gold production from its flagship Seabee mine in Saskatchewan in 1991. Just last year, Claude added the Santoy 8 mine to that operation to offer a touch of timely growth. Meanwhile, the operation hosts a number of compelling exploration targets like the recently discovered Neptune zone. After 10 of 15 recent drill holes from Neptune featured visible gold, including a nice high-grade intercept of 84.66 g/t over 3.2 meters, prospects are building for Claude to add some additional years to this time-tested operation.

While I welcome the existing cash flow from Seabee, my investment thesis for Claude Resources centers around a pair of exciting exploration properties: the Amisk joint venture project southeast of Seabee and the Madsen property at Red Lake, Ontario. At Madsen, historical gold production between 1938 and 1976 yielded 2.4 million ounces at an average grade of 9 g/t. To date, Claude has identified an indicated resource of 928,000 ounces at a comparable grade. At Amisk, drill intercepts of eye-catching thickness suggest strong potential for a profitable open pit operation, including an intercept of 2.16 g/t over 241 meters! The deposit's 921,000 indicated gold-equivalent ounces represent only an early stage hint of the deposit's full potential. The stock is a top-10 holding for Sprott Asset Management, and a core holding for this Fool as well.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sy_Harding]

First Majestic Silver is one of the purest silver plays on the market. The company owns and operates three primary silver mines in Mexico: La Parrilla, San Martin, and La Encantada.

Shares of AG have risen more than 60% for the year.

First Majestic generates 85% of its revenue through the production and sale of silver. The rest of the company's revenue is generated through gold, lead, and zinc.

First Majestic expects to increase total silver output from its operations to 7.5 million ounces of silver in 2011, and up to 16.0 million ounces by 2014.

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2014: Northgate Minerals Corporation(NXG)

Northgate Minerals Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in exploring, developing, processing, and mining gold and copper deposits in Canada and Australia. Its principal producing assets include 100% interests in the Fosterville and Stawell Gold mines in Victoria, Australia; and the Kemess South mine located in north-central British Columbia, Canada. The company was formerly known as Northgate Exploration Limited and changed its name to Northgate Minerals Corporation in May 2004. Northgate Minerals Corporation was founded in 1919 and is headquartered in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Barker]

I'm not the only Fool who perceives compelling value in the shares of this 90-year-old gold company. My colleague Andrew Sullivan made Northgate his inaugural selection within the Fool's Rising Star Portfolio Series. With anticipated production from Young-Davidson beginning in early 2012, and consistent exploration success at multiple properties, I consider this recently stagnant stock among the clearest rising stars in the gold patch.

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2014: Iamgold Corporation(IAG)

IAMGOLD Corporation, together with its subsidiaries, engages in the exploration, development, and production of mineral resource properties worldwide. It primarily explores for gold, silver, zinc, copper, niobium, diamonds, and other metals. The company holds interests in eight operating gold mines, a niobium producer, a diamond royalty, and exploration and development projects located in Africa and the Americas. Its advanced exploration and development projects include the Westwood project in Canada; and the Quimsacocha project, which consists of 3 mining concessions covering an aggregate area of approximately 8,030 hectares in Ecuador. The company was formerly known as IAMGOLD International African Mining Gold Corporation and changed its name to IAMGOLD Corporation in June 1997. IAMGOLD Corporation was founded in 1990 and is based in Toronto, Canada.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Christopher Barker]

Although I have not shed my long-standing contention that Yamana Gold offers one of the more deeply discounted vehicles for long-term gold exposure, lately my outlook for IAMGOLD has turned particularly bullish. With a looming spin-off of a 10% to 20% stake in the company's reliably profitable Niobec niobium mine, and the recent sale of its interest in a pair of high-cost gold operations in Ghana for $667 million, IAMGOLD finds itself in terrific financial shape to execute an aggressive $1.2 billion expansion imitative at existing operations.

Considering the $1.6 billion net asset value (after tax) that IAMGOLD recently assessed for the Niobec mine alone, and a presumed hoard of more than $1.2 billion (in cash, cash equivalents, and gold bullion held for investment), at a market capitalization of $6.9 billion I find extreme comfort in the market's resulting valuation for IAMGOLD's 15.2 million ounces of attributable gold reserves.

10 Best Gold Stocks For 2014: Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc.(TC)

Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in mining, milling, processing, and marketing molybdenum products in the United States and Canada. The company produces molybdenum products, primarily molybdic oxide and ferromolybdenum, as well as soluble technical oxide, pure molybdenum tri-oxide, and high purity molybdenum disulfide. As o f December 31, 2010, its consolidated recoverable proven and probable ore reserves totaled 462.2 million pounds of contained molybdenum in the Thompson Creek Mine and the Endako Mine. The company was formerly known as Blue Pearl Mining Ltd. and changed its name to Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. in May 2007. Thompson Creek Metals Company Inc. is based in Denver, Colorado.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Christopher Barker]

My recent survey of bargain-basement stock valuations among gold miners identified Thompson Creek Metals as a glaring opportunity for value investors. The miner sports two world-class molybdenum mines with 534 million pounds of reserves between them, along with an array of attractive development projects in the pipeline. Foremost among those is the Mt. Milligan copper and gold project, where Thompson Creek expects to launch itself into the ranks of intermediate gold producers with production commencing in late 2013.

With 6 million ounces of gold reserves, accompanied by 2.1 billion pounds of copper, Mt. Milligan will deliver about 262,100 ounces of gold per year for the first six years of a 22-year mine life, averaging 194,500 ounces annually over that entire span. Although 25% of that gold production is already spoken for through a gold stream agreement with Royal Gold (Nasdaq: RGLD  ) , Thompson Creek Metals is sure to enjoy a powerful cash-flow explosion.

Goldcorp had net income $1.6 billion and negative cash flow of $300 million. Its net tangible assets have grown from -$2.4 billion in 2009 to nearly $20 billion last year. Top 10 Canadian Companies To Buy Right Now

If you're a value investor, you can pat yourself on the back, because most people aren't cut out to handle your style. It seems easy enough, right? All you have to do is find a stock out of favor, and then buy low and sell high. Of course, if it was that easy I wouldn't need to write this, nor would you be reading. The truth is that value investing is difficult and can often take years for the gains to pan out -- something investors have a hard time waiting for. If you can be patient enough, I think both Devon Energy (NYSE: DVN  ) and AK Steel Holding (NYSE: AKS  ) will reward investors. Here are some reasons to be bullish.

Devon Energy
Devon has an asset base that includes both oil and natural gas plays in the U.S. and Canada. Its recent change in strategy was to shift its focus to U.S. and Canadian assets and sell off its deepwater and international plays. Starting late in 2009, the company sold nearly $10 billion in assets, which has led to a very strong balance sheet.

Top 10 Canadian Companies To Buy Right Now: PPL Corporation(PPL)

PPL Corporation, an energy and utility holding company, generates and sells electricity; and delivers natural gas to approximately 5.3 million utility customers primarily in the northeastern and northwestern U.S. The company operates in four segments: Kentucky Regulated, International Regulated, Pennsylvania Regulated, and Supply. The Kentucky Regulated segment engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity; and the distribution and sale of natural gas to approximately 1.3 million customers in Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee. The International Regulated segment owns and operates electricity distribution businesses in the United Kingdom that deliver electricity to 7.7 million customers. The Pennsylvania Regulated segment delivers electricity to approximately 1.4 million customers in eastern and central Pennsylvania. The Supply segment owns and operates power plants to generate electricity using coal, uranium, natural gas, oil, and water res ources; markets and trades electricity and other purchased power to wholesale and retail markets; and acquires and develops domestic generation projects. It controls or owns a portfolio of generation assets of approximately 11,000 megawatts in Montana and Pennsylvania. As of December 31, 2010, the company?s distribution system included 649 substations with a capacity of 25 million kVA, 28,838 circuit miles of overhead lines, and 24,131 cable miles of underground conductors in the United Kingdom. It also operated 377 substations with a capacity of 31 million kVA, 33,122 circuit miles of overhead lines, and 7,368 cable miles of underground conductors in Pennsylvania. The company was founded in 1920 and is headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

You can't build a dividend portfolio without looking at utility stocks—which brings us to PPL.

PPL is a utility stock that owns 11,200 megawatts of generation capacity, and provides regulated utility service to electricity customers in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee and the UK. PPL also distributes natural gas to Kentucky. Just a few years ago PPL was primarily a generation firm, earning three-fourths of its profits by selling power on the open market. Today, though, the firm has shifted its strategy towards the stable income of the regulated utility business.

Stable, predictable income is the hallmark of a stellar dividend stock, and PPL has managed to pick up its regulated exposure while still keeping its uniqueness. A big differentiator for PPL is its energy distribution unit in the UK—that expertise in a foreign market should open the door to other overseas utility operations if attractive opportunities present themselves down the road.

Dividend growth at PPL is likely to cool in the next couple of years as the firm dumps considerable CapEx into upgrading its infrastructure. That's actually a good thing for dividend investors because it means that PPL's dividend prospects are going to be artificially held down in the near-term. With the firm's payout already at 4.87 percent, investors shouldn't have any trouble waiting a while for the next hike.

  • [By Michael Brush]

PPL (PPL) has a dividend yield of 5%.

Utilities are the classic dividend play from your grandparents' day. They're still a good place to get yield.

Wright says he favors PPL in part because the provider of electricity to customers in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee is out of favor with investors. "Your risk/reward is not going to get much better than it is now."

Electricity demand should increase as the economy picks up. And much of the revenue from increased sales will fall to the company's bottom line, because PPL generates power from lower-cost energy sources, particularly nuclear and coal.
